You and I know that the Bible is the ultimate book for changing human behavior. We all know people who’ve experience incredible changes in their lives, often overnight, and they credit it to the power of God working through the Bible.
Then, there are people who experience transformation in one or two areas of their lives, but have other areas where change just doesn’t seem to happen. Or, have you ever known someone who had been a Believer for years, and meeting or revival and suddenly, their problem was taken care of? And, unfortunately for YOU, the revival is over and the evangelist or guest speaker is halfway across the country by now, so you’re going to have to wait until next year when they come back to town again.
NOT NECESSARILY. First of all, dramatic, transformational experiences DO happen. And, they work. People who have struggled for years with addictions, self-sabotaging emotional patterns and unpredictable mood swings HAVE been changed PERMANENTLY, and instantaneously. As a matter of fact, ALL change is instantaneous – it’s the getting READY to change that takes weeks, months or even years.
To make dramatic lasting changes in your life, there are just SIX steps, simple ones that you need to follow. It doesn’t matter if it’s smoking that you want to stop, drinking, drug use, or something as simple (but annoying) as a “bad temper” or depression, worry or anxiety. Maybe overeating is something that has a grip on you, and YOU need to get a grip on IT. Or you want to stop cussing. You want to break free from an addiction to pornography. Or money.
Taking these six steps will ABSOLUTELY transform ANY behavior that you want to be rid of. It even works for dealing with painful memories and bad attitudes. You can also use them to “trigger” changes in other people. Your kids. Your spouse. Even your boss.
These 6 steps are all found in your Bible. (They’re also being taught and used by some of the top “people helpers” in the world to rid people of bad habits, and self-defeating habits.) You can find them in essence in the writings of Moses. Jesus taught them and demonstrated them. So did the apostles. That’s why people in Bible days were being so radically transformed…and effective for God. Why they weren’t victims of their past hurts and failures; why they weren’t “held hostage” by such nuisances as being overly sensitive, bad tempered, self-pitying…or addicted to overrating, immorality and drug or alcohol use.
You say, “Steve, it was because they all got miraculous deliverance by the power of the Holy Ghost! I just can’t seem to GET the miracle I need.” What they got WAS miraculous that God put it into your mind and spirit to be ABLE to be transformed “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.” And, it’s miraculous that this power is the INSIDE of you and can be drawn upon by you at ANY time, once you understand HOW to do it.
The FIRST step to total change is simple, just like the other five. It’s simply this: DECIDE WHAT YOU WANT TO BE LIKE AND ALSO WHAT’S KEEPING YOU FROM BEING THAT WAY. Most people can tell you what they DON’T want to be like. They can tell you what they DON’T want to happen. They can tell you WHO they don’t want to be like. They can tell you how they don’t want to ACT. But, that WON’T bring the changes you want.
You can spend all day thinking, “I don’t want to be overweight. I don’t want to keep being depressed. I don’t want to smoke anymore.” And the changes will NEVER come. Why not? THERE’S A BIBLE PRINCIPLE THAT WE GET CHANGED OR INFLUENCED BY WHATEVER WE FOCUS ON, OR THINK ON. “If we focus on what we DON’T want, we’ll still get MORE of it.
So, the FIRST step is to DECIDE WHAT YOU DO WANT. That way, you have something to move toward. The more specific you can be, the more complete your change will be. Instead of, “I don’t want to be so overweight,” try, “I want to adjust my eating habits so I can shed 20 pounds.”
Then, once you KNOW what you want, what’s preventing you from having it? What’s stopping you from making the change? Usually, it’s as simple as this: We associate more pain and disappointment from MAKING the change than we do from staying the way we are. We don’t like to smoke, but the pain and frustration of QUITTING seems to outweigh the pain of continuing to smoke. So, we keep on smoking and keep feeling like we should desire for it. That CAN happen. You’ll learn how to make it happen for you when you hear this message.
Most people already know they want to make some changes. The problem is that they just can’t get themselves to do it. Change usually isn’t a question of whether or not we’re ABLE, but it’s ALWAYS a question of NOTIVATION. Of not wanting to change BADLY enough, or not wanting to change NOW. If a lunatic held a gun to your head and told you that if you a) lit another cigarette b) overate c) lost your temper and let out with a bunch of cuss words or d) whatever it is that YOU do, that he would blow your head off – You could probably find a way to change your habits REAL quick. The difference? Motivation!

It takes more than knowing we SHOULD change. If you’ve tried lots of times to free yourself from such behavioral nuisances as drugs, smoking, drinking, cussing, overeating or emotional patterns like depression, anger, feeling fearful or worrying or just feeling inadequate – and you’ve failed to make the change, it simply means that there weren’t enough reasons for you to change.

We have to either find it ourselves or get it from someone else, who HAS.
